Teaching Phonics Well: What do you need to know to do this?

Teaching Phonics Well: What do you need to know to do this?

All students K - 6 and beyond need to understand letter-sound links to be able to read and spell with ease. This workshop will help you:

  • understand where and how phonics fits into the bigger picture of word study (whether you lean on a program or not)
  • increase your understanding of speech production and your confidence in being able to analyse words to determine the function of the letters
  • identify what you need in place for effective teaching of phonics, considering such things as:
  • explicit teaching compared to, or part of, inquiry
  • daily and weekly routines
  • a scope and sequence
  • materials such as sound or grapheme charts

Workshop format: This workshop is separated into 2 sessions of 75 minutes each with time for notetaking included.

A study guide is provided to record your learning and will remain a valuable resource for future reference.

This workshop was originally conducted in November 2023 with more than 180 educators from around the world logging in to learn live with Fiona Hamilton of wordtorque.

On the Teachable platform this workshop will remain accessible for three months from the date of purchase. We thank you for not sharing your login but instead pointing colleagues to our website to register for the workshop themselves.
